The Power of Teachable Moments

Mon, 12/14/2009 - 10:42

A rainbow, a tube of toothpaste, a holiday dinner — how can these ordinary things be used to teach kids about the Bible? They can all be used to illustrate a "teachable moment." The teachable-moment method of faith building enlightens your children about God in a way that captures their attention and changes their lives. No lectures. No manuals. No rolling of the eyes. No kidding!

Your children will learn biblical principles that they'll never forget.

A "teachable moment" is like creating an on-the-spot commercial for biblical principles using simple, everyday language and familiar objects. If you see a beautiful tree growing near a lake, for example, you can point it out and say to your child, "Isn't that tree magnificent? God says that people of faith are like that tree. Trees stay strong because they grow near the water. People stay strong when they grow closer to God."

Once you discover the three ingredients of a teachable moment, you will have a method to make a life-changing spiritual impact through everyday events.

Sole Mate?

Mon, 12/14/2009 - 10:38

"Our culture has embraced a rather absurd notion that there is just one person who can, in the words immortalized by Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire, "complete us." This is a disastrous mindset with which to approach a lifelong marital decision.

"Our culture has embraced a rather absurd notion that there is just one person who can, in the words immortalized by Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire, "complete us." This is a disastrous mindset with which to approach a lifelong marital decision.

In a biblical view, there is not "one right choice" for marriage, but rather good and bad choices. We are encouraged to use wisdom, not destiny, as our guide when choosing a marital partner. There is no indication that God creates "one" person for us to marry. This is because Christians believe that God brings the primary meaning into our lives. Marriage — though wonderful — is still secondary."

Kairos Journal on Homosexuality

Mon, 12/14/2009 - 10:37

"Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion."  -- Romans 1:26-27 (NIV)

Regarding this text, the Metropolitan Community Churches (the homosexual denomination) have argued that “natural relations” refers to a person’s individual sexual inclination. They say the passage condemns those who have a natural inclination toward heterosexuality and yet engage in homosexual activity. The opposite is also true, by their account. If you are homosexually inclined, you should not become involved in heterosexual relations. In all this, there is no condemnation of homosexuality itself. The great sin, as the argument goes, is acting against one’s individual sexual nature.

There are several considerations that are conclusive against this understanding. First, the Greek word for “nature,” phusis, is not to be taken in the psychologized, individualistic sense to which we are accustomed today. Paul used it to refer to the created order, the way God intended His creation to function. Second, Paul uses the uncommon words thelus (female) and arsen (male) instead of gune (woman) and aner (man). Those are the very words used in the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Old Testament) in the Genesis creation account. Paul is thus reaching back to make a point about the primal distinctiveness of males and females, and about the creation ordinance that sexual relations are to be exclusively between one man and one woman.

Notice that Paul writes that once God handed these people over to shameful lusts, it was the men and women themselves who made the decision to “exchange” and “abandon” natural relations with the opposite sex. They made a conscious decision to capitulate to their inflamed lusts and “commit indecent acts” with those of the same sex.

Human nature was marred in countless ways by the Fall, and people are twisted and turned by the world, yet each individual is still responsible for the choices he or she makes. Yes, there may be those who, for one reason or another, are more susceptible for a season to the blandishments of homosexuals, just as there may be those abnormally disposed toward violence, lying, blasphemy, and theft. Yet the Church should no more indulge homosexual desires than it should indulge other unholy desires. Sin is sin.

It is tempting to preach, “Just say, ‘No,’” but this fails to take into account the terrible grip that homosexuality can have on people, the sensual tyranny that they suffer. Some have been hurt by early childhood experiences, and decades of practice have reinforced their choice. They suffer from incomplete and arrested sexuality, but hostility toward this lack falls short of helpfulness. Rather, the Church (and if not the Church, who?) can encourage them to “Just say, ‘Yes’” to the prompting of the Holy Spirit, who bears the love, truth, and power of God.1 The results can be miraculous.

Tax Payers Forced to Fund Abortion Under Obama

Mon, 12/14/2009 - 10:36

“Under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions,” Or so President Barack Obama promised to the American people in his health care address before a Joint Session of Congress on September 9th. But then why did the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops send a letter to Congress on October 8th writing: “No one should be required to pay for or participate in abortion.

… No current bill meets this test”?

Who is telling the truth? The President or the Bishops? Last Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was asked this question during his daily press briefing and answered: “Well, I don’t want to get me in trouble at church, but I would mention there’s a law that precludes the use of federal funds for abortion that isn’t going to be changed in these health care bills.” Unsatisfied, the CNS News’ Fred Lucas again pressed on Friday:

The Catholic bishops have repeatedly said that the Hyde amendment would not apply to the health care bill and yesterday in the letter that they sent to Congress they said that if language expressly prohibiting abortion funding is not added to the health care bill, they will vigorously — “vigorously oppose” — that’s a quote — the bill. My question on that, does the President support the bishops on this?
