Critical Thinking in the Classroom
Louisiana Family Forum Action drafted and promoted the Louisiana Science Education Act through the Legislature and State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education in order to foster an environment of academic freedom in the classroom. The bill passed out of both houses nearly unanimously and was signed by the governor.
LFF has long worked to promote critical thinking in the classroom. There are several controversial issues in the public square today. One of the primary issues that gets attention (because it sells newspapers!) is evolutionism. LFF Action believes evolutionism should not be taught uncritically. Errors and omissions in the texts should be discussed, not hidden in the corner.
Despite faulty textbooks, there are many practical alternatives available today to the uncritical teaching of evolutionism, including biology textbook addenda and DVD teaching modules.
A practical first step for citizen-activists is to urge local school boards to enact Academic Freedom Resolutions such as the Ouachita Parish School Board unanimously adopted in 2006. The policy shoehorns well with the above-mentioned Science Education Act.
